Prepare yourself, since every year beginning in 1999, Pantone announces a defining hue. This choice aims to capture the current cultural mood—informing everything from our emotions and what we wear to how we design our living spaces. 2025's selection was the deep beige "a coffee-inspired shade," following the subtly inviting "a delicate peach tone."

The latest selection, however, is even more puzzling. It is "Cloud Dancer," described by a "billowy, balanced white."

Laurie Pressman, vice-president of the Pantone Color Institute, remarked that it is "a pivotal neutral tone … enabling all colors to shine."

Well, Cloud Dancer sounds… wait, white? Could they be trolling us? Can white truly be considered a proper color?

Feedback online, however, has been less complimentary. A number of observers have accused Pantone of being completely "Pantonedeaf." Style expert Mandy Lee called it "underwhelming." Some have even drawn parallels to subtle advocacy of certain ideologies seen in recent advertising.

Okay, it's to be hoped they're happily ignorant that now is a sensitive time to be explicitly championing pure white... So, how might someone who doesn't follow a catwalk apply this news in everyday routine? I recently coated my ceiling with white, does that count?
